So What Is SmartMusic?

SmartMusic is the award winning software used by music educators around the world to enhance their programs and provides a way to dramatically improve their students’ skills. Student practice is focused because they receive immediate feedback while listening to their performance and seeing the correct and incorrect rhythms and pitches onscreen. It also allows the teacher to provide students with the individual instruction and customized feedback needed to get better faster. Students are also able to hear their part in context with SmartMusic’s professional background accompaniment, giving them a pitch and rhythmic reference when practicing at home.
SmartMusic is purchased as an annual subscription, which gives your student access to the largest digital sheet music library with accompaniment in the world. Subscribers sign up for classes designed by their teachers, and receive practice materials tailored to their specific needs. This allows students to receive the individualized instruction necessary to improve at a faster pace.
Ok so WHY SmartMusic?
Music Educators love their rehearsal time. But we also want to help our musicians out individually as much as possible! Unfortunately these two don’t mesh well as it is nearly impossible to provide individualized instruction and assessment without sacrificing our ensemble rehearsal time.
SmartMusic is the answer.
SmartMusic is the way for me to do both! I am able to hear my students individually and provided much more guidance and individual help.
How do I get it? Do I have to get it?
The school has purchased student subscriptions that are available to all band students. We have a signup list during band as well as the opportunity to use the software before/after school, and during study halls. However, we are limited by space and we have 70+ students using the 2 computers and 1 iPad we have available. Assessments are sometimes as frequent as 1 a week, which can prove to be difficult with that many students using our limited space/supplies. If you or your student is ok with this system, then there is no need to purchase your own subscription.
Purchasing a subscription is not a requirement of being in band. It is, however, highly encouraged! Having the freedom to practice assessments and music at home is a huge benefit! The subscription is only $40 for the full year and you get a tremendous amount of benefit. Students can work on assessments on their own time, over weekends and will have a massive amount of practice tools and music available to them.
